Embry Riddle Men’s Golf Team captured its first California Pacific Conference Championship Tuesday at Hiddenbrook Golf Course in Vallejo, California, securing their place in the 2013 NAIA Men’s National Golf Championships. The par 72 Arnold Palmer layout, set in the hills of Napa Valley, was very tight and narrow playing extremely difficult with challenging conditions including 25-30 mile an hour winds.
The Eagles opened up the first round with a team score of 308 and a 13 shot lead over Simpson University. Kale Davidson’s 74 and Austin Sverdrup’s 76 lead the team. During the second round Simpson University posted their low round of the championship, 309, and cut the Eagles’ lead to 2 shots. The Eagles were led by Dylan Kinney who posted a 76 during the second round leading the Eagle squad with a 2 day total of 154. This put Dylan in second place overall going into the final round of play. The final day the Eagles responded with 4 players shooting rounds in the 70’s giving them the lowest team score of the tournament, 305. The 54 hole total of 933 was a 15 shot victory over 2nd place Simpson University.
Individually Embry Riddle had 3 players finish in the top 5. Dylan Kinney finished Runner-Up with 9 birdies and 1 eagle on his way to a tournament total of 229. Kale Davidson finished 3rd with 8 birdies and 1 eagle posting a 54 hole total of 231. Austin Sverdrup had 9 birdies and 1 eagle on his way to a 54 hole total of 225 to finish 4th. Coach Kim Haddow: “I am extremely proud of and excited for this young squad and their success in only the second year of our program. They truly are a strong TEAM with each player contributing at least one round during the tournament. “
Coach Mike Haddow: “I am proud of the way our young men handled the pressure of the final round in a national qualifying event. We were the only team to post 4 rounds in the 70’s during the final round.
Senior Dylan Kinney provided strong leadership and confidence, along with his outstanding play during the tournament that infected the others.
Austin Sverdrup was solid as a rock for our team. He consistently posted scores that count in our team total.
Kale Davidson provided the exclamation point to this tournament hitting a 210 yard 4 iron against the wind on the 18th hole to within 6 feet of the pin, making eagle.”
